SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy

SDG 7 ‘Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all’ highlights the key role of energy as a central issue in sustainable development.

In the updated NDC submissions, 14% of activities addressed Goal 7 compared with 17% in the first NDC submissions. In the first NDCs, countries were prioritising targets '7.2 Increase share of renewable energy' (51%) and '7.3 Double the rate of improvement in energy efficiency' (35%), linking these to 'Energy efficiency' (22%), 'Clean and renewable energy' (16%) and 'Solar energy' (10%) as key strategies for climate action. In the updated NDCs, countries are prioritising targets '7.2 Increase share of renewable energy' (52%) and '7.3 Double the rate of improvement in energy efficiency' (40%), linking these to 'Energy efficiency' (22%) 'Clean and renewable energy' (20%) and 'Solar energy' (8%) as key strategies for climate action.

Regarding first NDC submissions, activities related to this Goal are prioritising mitigation with 86% of the activities, while 7% focus on adaptation. Meanwhile, for updated NDC submissions 88% prioritise mitigation and 88% adaptation. The share of quantified activities has increased from 30% in the first NDCs to 51% in the updated NDC submissions.
