SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation

SDG 6 ’Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all’ focuses on resource efficiency, water governance, transboundary management, and provision of sanitation.

In the updated NDC submissions, 6% of activities addressed Goal 6 compared with 9% in the first NDC submissions. In the first NDCs, countries were prioritising targets '6.4 Increase water-use efficiency and sustainable withdrawal - reduce water scarcity' (48%) and '6.6 Protect and restore water-related ecosystems' (15%), linking these to 'Water supply' (14%), 'Efficient use of water' (11%) and 'Water management' (8%) as key strategies for climate action. In the updated NDCs, countries are prioritising targets '6.4 Increase water-use efficiency and sustainable withdrawal - reduce water scarcity' (41%) and '6.3 Improve water quality, reduce pollution, increase recycling' (21%), linking these to 'Water management' (13%) 'Efficient use of water' (8%) and 'Water supply' (8%) as key strategies for climate action.

Regarding first NDC submissions, activities related to this Goal are prioritising adaptation with 91% of the activities, while 4% focus on mitigation. Meanwhile, for updated NDC submissions 86% prioritise adaptation and 86% mitigation. The share of quantified activities has increased from 9% in the first NDCs to 20% in the updated NDC submissions.
